A classic Thai stir-fry of minced pork with holy basil. Quick and easy to make using only an electric skillet. Bold flavors and aromatic basil, perfect for a quick meal.
If you are looking for a dish that is easy, fast, and delicious, Stir-fried Minced Pork with Holy Basil (Pad Kra Pao) is the perfect answer! Whether you are in a dorm, condo, or have limited kitchen space, an electric skillet is all you need to create this authentic Pad Kra Pao. The secret to a perfect Electric Skillet Pad Kra Pao lies in the heat management. Start by sautéing garlic and chili until fragrant, then cook the minced pork until just right. Season with oyster sauce, soy sauce, and dark soy sauce for color. Finally, add fresh holy basil and turn off the heat immediately to release its maximum aroma without turning the leaves dark. Even with an electric skillet, you can achieve a rich, savory sauce that pairs perfectly with hot jasmine rice and a crispy fried egg.
Ingredients
- 300 g Minced pork
- 30 g Holy basil (about 1 cup)
- 15 g Garlic (4-5 cloves)
- 10 g Bird's eye chili (5-10 chilies (to taste))
- 1.5 tbsp Oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp Light soy sauce
- 1 tsp Dark soy sauce
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 1 tbsp Vegetable oil
- 2 tbsp Water
Instructions
- 1Pound or mince garlic and bird's eye chili into a coarse paste.
- 2Plug in the electric skillet and set to medium-high heat. Add vegetable oil and wait until it starts to get hot.
- 3Add garlic and bird's eye chili, stir-fry until fragrant.
- 4Add minced pork and stir, breaking up the meat. Cook until the pork is about 80% done.
- 5Season with oyster sauce, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and sugar. Stir to combine. If it looks too dry, add a little water.
- 6Once the pork is cooked and coated in sauce, turn off the electric skillet (or unplug) immediately. Add holy basil and toss quickly until wilted from the residual heat.
- 7Serve over hot jasmine rice.
Chef's Tips
- •If you like it spicy and colorful, mix dried chilies with fresh ones when pounding.
- •Turning off the heat before adding holy basil helps keep the leaves bright green and prevents them from becoming black and tough.
- •For convenience, you can fry an egg in the electric skillet first, set it aside, and then use the same skillet to cook the basil pork.
