A classic, incredibly moist, and rich chocolate sponge cake made in a single bowl. The perfect base for any celebratory dessert.
This simple chocolate cake is a real find for any home baker, whether a beginner or a pro. When you crave something sweet, rich, and incredibly cozy, it's this simple chocolate cake that comes to the rescue. This recipe perfectly balances the deep flavor of cocoa with a delicate, moist sponge texture that literally melts in your mouth. The secret to its amazing softness lies in adding boiling water at the very end of the mixing: the hot water not only blooms the cocoa, revealing its maximum chocolate aroma, but also makes the crumb incredibly velvety. You'll be surprised how easy it is to make this simple chocolate cake with common ingredients you likely already have in your pantry. All-purpose flour, sugar, some good cocoa powder, and milk are the basic foundation for creating a true pastry masterpiece. You can serve it as is, lightly dusted with powdered sugar, or layer it with your favorite frosting—be it classic buttercream, delicate cream cheese, or a rich chocolate ganache. This recipe is guaranteed to become your go-to for holidays, children's birthdays, or just cozy evening tea sessions with the family. Don't be afraid to experiment: you can add a pinch of cinnamon or a bit of instant coffee to the batter to further enhance and deepen the chocolate profile. Bake with pleasure, enjoy the creative process, and let your perfect simple chocolate cake be the main and most delicious centerpiece of the table!
Ingredients
- 210 g All-purpose flour
- 300 g Sugar
- 45 g Cocoa powder
- 1.5 tsp Baking powder
- 1.5 tsp Baking soda
- 1 tsp Salt
- 2 pcs Eggs
- 240 ml Milk
- 120 ml Vegetable oil (neutral)
- 2 tsp Vanilla sugar
- 240 ml Boiling water
Instructions
- 1Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease a baking pan with butter or oil and line the bottom with parchment paper.
- 2In a large bowl, thoroughly mix the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- 3Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla sugar to the dry mixture. Beat with a mixer on medium speed or with a whisk for about 2 minutes until a smooth, thick mass is formed.
- 4Reduce the mixing speed to low and carefully pour in the boiling water in a thin stream. The batter will be quite thin—this is normal.
- 5Pour the prepared batter into the baking pan.
- 6Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes. Check for doneness with a wooden skewer: it should come out of the center clean.
- 7Cool the sponge in the pan for 10 minutes, then carefully remove and cool completely on a wire rack before serving or frosting.
Chef's Tips
- •For a deeper flavor, replace half of the boiling water with hot freshly brewed coffee.
- •Do not open the oven door for the first 25 minutes of baking to prevent the sponge from collapsing.
- •This cake keeps well in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, becoming even moister and tastier over time.
